Bitcoin Wizard Style Guide

Guidelines for creating and submitting designs

Introduction

Welcome to the Bitcoin Wizard Style Guide! This guide provides all the necessary information and resources for creating consistent, high-quality submissions to the collection. Our goal is to involve the community in building a diverse and vibrant set of traits while ensuring that all submitted designs adhere to a cohesive style and format.

By contributing to this collection, you’ll help shape the Bitcoin Wizard universe and gain recognition as a key contributor. However, please note that submissions must follow strict compatibility guidelines to ensure all traits work well together.

We are only letting you out of the Asylum for a little while to complete this task. Return immediately with your submission(s) else we will be forced to withold your pills indefinitely.

The Origin of the Bitcoin Wizard

If you're here, you probably already know the origins of the Bitcoin Wizard, but before you start working on your submission, we want to make sure you refresh your memory.

The Bitcoin Wizard meme originated on Reddit's r/bitcoincommunity in 2013. It was originally drawn by @mavennsbot and included the tagline "Magic Internet Money." The image quickly became a beloved symbol, representing the playful yet revolutionary spirit of Bitcoin's early adopters.

Wizards have since become an integral part of OG Bitcoin culture, embodying the ethos of decentralization, creativity, and defiance of traditional systems. When working on your designs, keep in mind the legacy and cultural significance of the Bitcoin Wizard.

Typography

The typography in the Bitcoin Wizard collection draws inspiration from the original meme, featuring a distinct, hand-drawn style reminiscent of MS Paint. In other words, the worse your handwriting is, the better!

All text elements, including highlights, should be hand-crafted. The goal isn't to achieve clean, precise lines but to mimic the playful, slightly messy look you get when drawing with a mouse.

Highlights on text should also be hand-drawn, with uneven edges and intentional imperfections. This helps preserve the authenticity of the original Bitcoin Wizard aesthetic.

Traits and Symbols

We have 77 unique traits drawn already, and they all follow the guidelines below.

Keep It Timeless

The Bitcoin Wizard is a symbol of Bitcoin's early days and stands as a timeless icon. To preserve this legacy, we ask that you do not incorporate any external brand images, logos, other ordinal collection symbols, or icons into your designs. This includes both modern-day brands and any well-known symbols unrelated to Bitcoin Wizard culture.

Focus on Bitcoin Wizard Culture

While Bitcoin has inspired countless memes and cultural references, this collection is uniquely dedicated to the Bitcoin Wizard. We do not want to integrate any other memes or references, even if they’re widely recognized within the Bitcoin or broader crypto community. The Bitcoin Wizard should be the sole focus, keeping the collection pure and true to its origins.

Embrace the Hand-Drawn Look

A critical aspect of the Bitcoin Wizard style is its imperfect, hand-drawn appearance. Every icon, symbol, and detail should look like it was created using MS Paint with a mouse. True artists may find it challenging to abandon their pursuit of perfection, but that’s exactly what makes this style special. Forget precision and embrace the raw, playful aesthetic.

Explore the Traits

Use the interactive tool below to toggle different traits of the Bitcoin Wizard and understand how each part contributes to the overall design.

BackgroundFaceNoseEyesRobeBeardLeft HandHatMouthText
BackgroundThe canvas for the entire image, filling the full height and width.
FaceProvides the base structure for the wizard’s facial features.
NoseA subtle but important element, maintaining the hand-drawn aesthetic.
EyesExpressive elements, varying from simple dots to more elaborate styles.
RobeThe main clothing of the wizard, frequently decorated with patterns or textures.
BeardA defining feature of the wizard, typically hand-drawn in a rough, playful style.
Right HandSometimes holding an object and other times nothing.
Left HandOften holding an object like fire or other magical items.
HatA key character trait, often unique to the wizard’s personality.
MouthAdds personality to the wizard, whether smiling, frowning, or neutral.
TextMS Paint-style hand-drawn text, often using highlights for emphasis.

Additionally, we have a "type" feature which is a thematic element unique to special collections of wizards, aligning them with a specific narrative.

Spacing and Compatibility

An important aspect of trait design is spacing and compatibility. The goal is to ensure that individual traits fit together seamlessly to maintain the integrity of the overall design. For instance, a left-hand trait should not overlap or obscure key elements like the wizard’s eyes, while a mouth trait covering one eye might be an acceptable stylistic choice. Similarly, if you’re designing a variation of a mouth, you’ll need to consider how it interacts with the beard to avoid visual conflicts.

The assumption should be that almost every trait is compatible with others. This allows for maximum flexibility and ensures a diverse range of combinations. However, there may be situations where certain traits do not work well together—for example, a large hat that obscures a prominent facial feature. In such cases, explicit exclusions can be made to prevent incompatible combinations.

When designing your traits, keep these principles in mind:

  • Maintain Consistent Spacing: Each trait should occupy its designated area without significantly overlapping others.
  • Test Compatibility: Play around in Photoshop or Procrete toggling layers on and off to ensure your trait works well with the default versions of other traits and consider edge cases.
  • Allow for Overlap Where Intentional: Some overlap can enhance the design, but it should be deliberate and stylistically consistent.
  • Plan for Exclusions Sparingly: Use exclusions only when absolutely necessary to maintain compatibility across the collection.

Assets

To help you get started, we’ve provided essential resources, including base files, a custom Procreate brush, and recommendations for the tools you’ll need. Whether you’re using an iPad or desktop, we’ve got you covered.

Please use different layers for different parts of your traits. Examine the "Fire" Left Hand trait for an example. The more layers the better, as it will allow us to work towards a color-perfect and compatible trait with you.

How to Import the Procreate Brush

Follow these steps to import and start using the custom brush in Procreate:

  1. Download the Bitcoin Wizard Brush file (.brush).
  2. Open Procreate on your iPad.
  3. Tap the brush icon to open the brush library.
  4. Tap the "+" in the upper right corner to create a new brush set, or select an existing set.
  5. Tap "Import" and select the downloaded brush file.

Once imported, you’ll find the brush in your selected set. Use it to replicate the hand-drawn look essential to the Bitcoin Wizard style.

Recommended Tools

Here’s a quick guide to the tools we recommend for creating your designs:

For iPad Users

  • iPad: Any model that supports Procreate.
  • Procreate: The go-to app for digital art, available on the App Store.
  • Apple Pencil: For precise, pressure-sensitive drawing.

For Desktop Users

  • Computer with Photoshop: Ideal for those who prefer working with a mouse or tablet.
  • Mouse or Tablet: Use a mouse to capture the rough "MS Paint" aesthetic or a tablet for more control.

How to Use the Base Files

The base files are structured to ensure consistency. Use the background and guideline layers to position your elements correctly. Save your designs as high-resolution PNGs for submission.
